Choosing Stillness and Nature’s Kindness

This week on the north east coast, we have experienced a real mix of weather, including rain and fog. For me, this variety has somehow supported an inclination towards stillness. The weather itself seems to invite slowing down and turning inward.

One day felt particularly muggy and heavy, with the threat of thunderstorms hanging in the air. I was low in energy and out and about near the beach, not far from home, feeling the need to centre and ground myself. I asked myself the wonderful Kind Mind Academy question, “What is the kindest thing I can do for myself right now?”

For a moment, I wondered if the answer might be to go home. But instead, what came to me was, “Go for a paddle.” There were ominous grey clouds around, and I knew I might get soaked, but it still felt like the right choice. So I went for it.

Feeling the sand between my toes immediately felt good. We know how grounding it can be to tune into the sensations in our feet and our walking. The sea was very calm. When I first stepped into the water it felt cold, but that soon changed as my feet adjusted. Step by step, the combination of soft sand and cool water worked its quiet magic.

I began to feel present with the beauty of the sea, the stormy sky, and the many seagulls gathered near the water’s edge. After a recent heavy downpour, the beach was virtually empty, a rare sight in the middle of the day, and one I found myself enjoying deeply.

As I paddled, I watched mist rolling in. The lifeguards soon declared the beach unsafe for swimming as visibility dropped. I continued paddling gently in the mist, appreciating the slightly eerie atmosphere it created. All in all, my kind choice worked very well for me, and I felt very grateful.

The next day brought more heavy rain. I stayed at home, again making a kind choice to take things gently. Sitting by an open window, I found myself enjoying the sight and sound of raindrops falling on the vegetation. I am so blessed where I live. I look out onto my neighbour’s wonderful, established Victorian-style garden. It feels remarkable that she has statues and flowers I would have chosen myself, a gorgeous garden for me to enjoy with no gardening involved.

I love watching birds bathing in the bird baths she has placed there. Wildlife joy right on my doorstep. Once again, I felt a deep sense of appreciation.

This week’s self-kindness invitation is to try asking yourself the question, “What is the kindest thing I can do for myself right now?” Especially at times when you may feel ungrounded or are facing difficult feelings or situations. Something as simple as a walk, or giving yourself time to watch a bird in the garden, can be an act of kindness. Nature’s balm. Or perhaps a nice cup of coffee. Or something else entirely.

Listening gently and responding kindly to yourself is always a good place to begin.
