Awe, Wonder, and the Magic of Adventure

September 06, 20265 min read

What happens when we give ourselves permission to explore, to be curious, and simply say, “Wow”?

In this week’s Self-Compassion Stroll, Kathryn Lovewell and Lovely Liz take us on a magical adventure to Alnwick Castle in Northumberland—a magnificent historic castle with centuries of stories, fascinating architecture, and a little Harry Potter magic along the way.

More than simply a visit to a historic building, this stroll becomes an invitation to reconnect with awe, wonder, curiosity, and joy.

Self-Compassion Can Be an Adventure

When we think about self-compassion, we might imagine meditation, quiet reflection, or taking time to rest.

And those things can certainly be compassionate.

But self-compassion can also be adventurous.

It can be stepping somewhere new.

It can be allowing ourselves to become fascinated by something.

It can be exploring history, admiring beautiful craftsmanship, laughing with a friend, or simply standing somewhere extraordinary and thinking:

Wow.

As Kathryn says during the stroll, self-compassion isn't only “deep and groovy.”

Sometimes, it's adventure.

Sometimes, it's awe and wonder.

And sometimes, it's letting ourselves feel excited about the world around us.

Walking Through History

Alnwick Castle is filled with reminders of the people and generations that have passed through its walls.

As Kathryn and Liz explore, they discover ancient archways, huge stone doors, worn steps, gargoyles, old wells, cannons, servants' corridors, and beautifully preserved rooms.

Every detail seems to offer another question.

Who walked here?

What happened behind these walls?

What did this place look like hundreds of years ago?

How many stories could these stones tell?

There is something grounding about stepping into a place with such a long history.

Our everyday worries can feel enormous when we're caught up inside them. But moments of awe can gently shift our perspective.

We remember that there is a much bigger world beyond our immediate concerns.

And sometimes, that's exactly what we need.

The Magic of Harry Potter

Of course, Alnwick Castle also has a little extra magic for Harry Potter fans.

Parts of the films were filmed here, and the famous courtyard becomes particularly special when Kathryn and Liz discover visitors taking part in broomstick flying lessons.

Standing on the Quidditch lawn, it's easy to imagine the castle being transformed into Hogwarts.

There's something delightful about allowing our imagination to take over for a moment.

As adults, we can sometimes forget how nourishing it can be to play, imagine, and be a little bit silly.

Self-compassion doesn't require us to take ourselves seriously all the time.

Joy matters too.

The Power of Awe

Throughout the stroll, Kathryn repeatedly finds herself saying one simple word:

“Wow.”

Sometimes there simply aren't enough words.

The scale of the castle.

The architecture.

The history.

The craftsmanship.

The surrounding landscape.

The sheer amount of human creativity that has gone into creating and maintaining such a place.

Awe invites us to pause.

It pulls our attention away from ourselves and towards something bigger.

And when we experience that sense of wonder, even briefly, we can feel refreshed and renewed.

Perhaps that's why giving ourselves opportunities to experience awe can be such a beautiful act of self-care.

Notice the Details

One of the loveliest parts of this stroll is the attention given to small details.

A weathered stone.

An old doorway.

The pattern of an arch.

A beautifully crafted hinge.

An ornate gate.

Even the lock on the gate becomes something worth stopping to appreciate.

It's a wonderful reminder that beauty doesn't always announce itself.

Sometimes we have to slow down enough to notice it.

How often might we walk past something beautiful because we're already thinking about where we need to go next?

What might happen if, just for a few minutes, we allowed ourselves to look more closely?

A Compassionate Use of Our Power

There is also a playful moment when Kathryn reflects on the castle as a place of power and connects this with fierce self-compassion.

Power isn't necessarily something to fear.

When used compassionately, our inner strength can help us protect ourselves, establish boundaries, make difficult choices, and stand up for what matters.

Self-compassion can be gentle.

But it can also be strong.

Sometimes kindness means softness.

Sometimes kindness means courage.

And sometimes we need both.

Give Yourself Permission to Be Amazed

By the end of the day, Kathryn reflects on how magical the experience has been.

After exploring the castle and learning about generations of history, she encourages us to seek out our own opportunities for awe and wonder.

We don't necessarily need to visit a magnificent castle.

It could be a beautiful garden.

A historic building.

A museum.

A woodland.

A coastline.

A piece of music.

A sunset.

Or simply something that makes us stop and think:

“Wow. I never noticed that before.”

The important thing is to give ourselves permission to experience it.

To pause.

To be curious.

To let ourselves enjoy something simply because it brings us joy.

Your Invitation This Week

Why not create your own little adventure?

Choose somewhere you've never explored before—or return somewhere familiar and challenge yourself to see it with fresh eyes.

Notice the details.

Ask questions.

Let yourself be curious.

Look for something that makes you smile.

And when you find something wonderful, resist the urge to immediately move on.

Pause.

Take it in.

Let yourself experience the moment.

Because self-compassion isn't only about supporting ourselves when life is difficult.

It's also about giving ourselves opportunities to experience joy, beauty, curiosity, playfulness, and wonder.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is step away from our worries for a little while and remember that the world is still full of extraordinary things to discover.

And perhaps, like Kathryn and Liz at Alnwick Castle, we can simply stand still for a moment and say:

Wow.

Go gently. 💙
