Finding Peace in the Present Moment at Machu Picchu

October 12, 2026•6 min read

Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is slow down and notice what's already around us.

In this Self-Compassion Stroll, Mary T. takes us to the breathtaking mountains of Machu Picchu, Peru, where she explores Little Mountain with her sister. Surrounded by birds, butterflies, flowing water, and beautiful mountain scenery, Mary invites us to appreciate the little things and listen to what our bodies need.

As she explores the ancient landscape, Mary discovers that there's no need to climb every mountain or reach every viewpoint to experience something meaningful. Sometimes, sitting quietly and noticing the world around us is more than enough.

Knowing When Enough Is Enough

Mary begins climbing a set of narrow steps on Little Mountain, but after a few steps, she decides not to continue.

Instead of pushing herself to reach the top, she chooses to stop somewhere that feels right for her.

It's a simple moment, but it offers a powerful reminder about self-compassion.

Do you give yourself permission to stop when you've done enough?

It's easy to feel that we should keep going, achieve more, or push ourselves just a little further. We might even compare ourselves with others who seem able to do more than we can.

But self-compassion invites us to listen to our own needs rather than measure ourselves against someone else's journey.

Mary's sister continues exploring, while Mary finds a comfortable spot to sit and enjoy the sunshine, birdsong, and surrounding vegetation.

Neither choice needs to be better than the other. They simply reflect what feels right for each person.

Sometimes, the kindest decision is to recognise our limits and allow ourselves to enjoy where we are.

Discovering Wonder in the Little Things

Once Mary settles into her surroundings, she begins noticing details that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

A small pebble catches the sunlight and sparkles. Another stone shines nearby. The lichen growing across the rocks catches her attention, as do the tiny plants that make her smile.

She also notices the beautiful patterns of white and dark green along the bamboo stems.

These discoveries remind us how much beauty can be found in ordinary moments when we give ourselves the time to look.

What might you notice today if you slowed down for a few minutes?

Perhaps it's the way sunlight falls across your room, the sound of birds outside your window, or the colours of a plant you've passed many times without really looking at it.

We don't always need to travel somewhere extraordinary to experience awe and wonder. Sometimes, we simply need to bring our attention back to the present moment.

Connecting with the World Around Us

Machu Picchu offers Mary plenty to appreciate, from the magnificent mountains and ancient agricultural terraces to the Temple of the Sun and the river flowing below.

As she takes in the scenery, she also notices the clouds moving across the sky, the breeze in the trees, and the sounds of the insects and birds.

Each detail becomes an invitation to pause and connect with her surroundings.

Nature can offer us a gentle way to step away from the constant demands of daily life. When we stop rushing from one task to another, we give ourselves an opportunity to experience the world through our senses.

We can listen, observe, feel, and simply be.

And we can do all of this without needing to accomplish anything.

A Mindful Self-Compassion Practice

During the stroll, Mary invites us to join her in a mindful self-compassion practice.

She asks a simple question:

“What do I notice? And what do you notice?”

Rather than searching for a particular answer, Mary encourages us to explore whatever is present in our experience.

What can you hear?

Perhaps the hum of a fan, the sound of traffic, birds outside, or the gentle rustling of leaves.

What can you feel on your face or skin?

Maybe there's a breeze, the warmth of the sunshine, or the sensation of your feet resting on the ground.

What can you notice inside your body?

If it feels comfortable, you might place a hand on your cheek, shoulder, heart, or belly. Notice the warmth of your hand against your skin, the movement of your breathing, or the rhythm of your heartbeat.

Then gently ask yourself:

How do I feel today?

You don't need to change your feelings or find the perfect words to describe them. You can simply acknowledge what's there, allowing yourself to be present with kindness and curiosity.

This is an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, one small moment at a time.

Listening to Your Body and Honouring Your Needs

As Mary waits for her sister to return, she reflects on her decision to stay where she is rather than attempt a more challenging walk.

She describes it as choosing the wiser option for herself.

This is an important part of self-compassion. Caring for ourselves means recognising that our needs can change from day to day.

Some days, we might feel ready to take on a challenge. On other days, we might need more rest, a slower pace, or a little space to breathe.

Neither makes us less capable or less worthy.

Can you give yourself the same understanding you'd offer someone you care about?

You don't have to earn your rest by reaching a particular milestone. You don't have to prove your strength by pushing through every difficulty.

You can honour your body, respect your limits, and still enjoy a meaningful experience.

Sometimes, choosing not to do more is an act of courage and kindness.

Finding Joy in Your Own Way

One of the lovely things about Mary's stroll is that she allows herself to enjoy the experience on her own terms.

While her sister explores further up the mountain, Mary appreciates the things within her reach: the blue sky, the vegetation, the butterflies, the breeze, and the beautiful lichen covering the rocks.

She doesn't need to see everything or go everywhere to find something worthwhile.

This reminds us that our experiences don't need to look like anyone else's.

We can find joy in quiet moments while others seek adventure. We can take a different path, move at our own pace, and discover what brings us a sense of peace.

The important thing is to remain curious about what we need and give ourselves permission to honour it.

A Little More Awareness, A Little More Kindness

This Self-Compassion Stroll at Machu Picchu reminds us that we don't always have to climb higher, move faster, or push ourselves further to experience the beauty of life.

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen when we stop.

When we notice a tiny sparkle on a pebble.

When we listen to the birds.

When we feel the breeze against our skin.

When we pause long enough to ask ourselves how we're really doing.

And when we choose to believe that what we can offer today is enough.

So, wherever you are, take a moment to look around you.

What do you notice?

What can you hear, feel, or appreciate in this moment?

And perhaps most importantly, what might your body and mind be asking you for today?

You don't have to climb every mountain. You can find beauty, connection, and peace right where you are.

Go gently. 💙
