Finding Joy in Your Own Little Paradise 🦋🌿
Sometimes, joy is much closer than we think.
In this Self-Compassion Stroll, Mary T takes us into her garden, a space she intentionally created as a pollinator’s paradise. Surrounded by butterflies, bees, flowers, passion vines, trees, and new growth, Mary invites us to slow down and notice the little moments of joy happening right in front of us.
Where Can You Find Joy?
As butterflies dance around Mary’s garden, she asks a simple but beautiful question:
“Where can you find joy within an arm’s length or even in your yard?”
For Mary, joy is found in the Gulf fritillary butterflies fluttering around her, the tiny caterpillars feeding on passion vines, the gentle breeze, and the busy hum of bees among the flowers.
It doesn't have to be something extraordinary.
Sometimes joy is simply noticing what is already here.
Creating a Place to Nourish Life
Mary planted her garden with pollinators in mind, and it's clear that the butterflies and caterpillars have found exactly what they need.
The passion vines provide food for the caterpillars, while flowers offer nourishment for butterflies and bees. Native plants provide food and shelter for birds and other creatures too.
Watching this little ecosystem unfold becomes a reminder of what can happen when we create spaces that allow life to flourish.
And perhaps we can ask ourselves:
What spaces in our own lives help us feel nourished?
Finding a Place Where We Feel at Home
Mary notices how the caterpillars stay close to the passion vines that have been feeding them.
This leads to a gentle reflection about our own sense of home.
Do you have a place in your home, neighborhood, or garden where you feel comfortable, safe, and nourished?
A place where you can simply be yourself?
Creating her garden was partly about having somewhere she could step outside in the morning or afternoon and appreciate the beauty around her.
We can create little places like that for ourselves too.
Growth Can Come After a Setback
One of the passion vines in Mary's garden had previously frozen back and looked as though it might have been lost.
But it came back.
And now it is growing abundantly.
Nature offers us so many reminders that a setback doesn't always mean the end of something. Sometimes there is growth happening beneath the surface, waiting for the right conditions to emerge again.
We can offer ourselves that same patience.
Planting for the Future
Mary also shares her excitement about planting trees, including a longleaf pine.
She knows that she may not be around to see the tree reach its full height or provide everything it eventually will but that's okay.
It becomes an opportunity to think about what we leave behind.
What are we nurturing today that might benefit someone or something in the future?
Self-compassion isn't only about caring for ourselves in the present moment. It can also involve recognizing that our actions can create nourishment, beauty, and possibility for others.
A Little More Joy, A Little More Care
This stroll is a beautiful reminder that joy doesn't always need to be searched for somewhere far away.
It might be a butterfly landing nearby.
A bee humming among the flowers.
A new plant appearing where you didn't expect it.
A gentle breeze.
Or simply having a little space where you feel at home.
So today, take a moment to look around you.
Where is joy within your arm's reach?
What can you notice, appreciate, or nurture?
And perhaps, like Mary, you might discover that creating a little paradise for others can also become a beautiful source of nourishment for yourself.
Go gently. 💙
