Finding Wonder in the Journey

August 30, 20263 min read

What if we didn't need to reach the destination before allowing ourselves to enjoy the journey?

Sometimes, a self-compassionate moment can be found in the simplest places: beside a stream, listening to flowing water, noticing the landscape around us, or discovering the story behind a place we've never visited before.

In this week's Self-Compassion Stroll, Mary T takes us to the beautiful Glen Carr Waterfall in County Leitrim, Ireland, in the heart of Yeats country.

The Journey Begins

Mary begins her stroll near the downflow of the waterfall, sharing that this landscape inspired W. B. Yeats and became part of his poem, The Stolen Child.

It's a wonderful reminder that the places we pass through can hold stories, memories, creativity, and meaning.

Mary reflects on not remembering reading much Yeats as a student and her curiosity about discovering more about his work. There is something beautifully human about admitting when we don't know something—and allowing ourselves to remain curious.

We don't have to know everything.

We can simply wonder.

We can explore.

We can discover.

And sometimes, that curiosity is enough to turn an ordinary walk into something memorable.

Enjoying What Is Already Here

As Mary makes her way towards the waterfall, she realises it is further away than she first thought.

But rather than rushing past everything else in search of the final destination, she pauses to appreciate the water and the landscape along the way.

This offers us a lovely invitation.

How often do we become so focused on where we're going that we forget to notice where we are?

We might spend our days thinking about the next task, the next appointment, the next achievement, or the next place we need to get to.

And yet, there can be beauty in the moments between.

The sound of water.

The fresh air.

The landscape surrounding us.

The anticipation of what might be around the next corner.

Self-compassion can sometimes mean giving ourselves permission to enjoy the moment we're actually living.

Nature, Poetry, and Imagination

There is something special about knowing that the landscape around us has inspired poetry.

The water Mary visits is connected with Yeats and The Stolen Child, bringing together nature, literature, history, and imagination.

A place can be more than simply a place.

It can become a source of inspiration.

It can remind us of a story.

It can awaken an old memory.

Or perhaps it can simply make us pause and think, How beautiful.

We don't always need to understand exactly why something moves us.

Sometimes we can simply allow ourselves to be moved.

A Little Moment of Self-Compassion

Mary's stroll is short, but that doesn't make the moment any less meaningful.

In fact, perhaps that's part of the lesson.

We don't always need a long walk, a perfect afternoon, or hours of free time to practise self-compassion.

A few minutes can be enough.

A pause can be enough.

Noticing something beautiful can be enough.

And even when we can't reach the destination we had imagined, there may still be something worthwhile waiting for us along the way.

What Can You Notice Today?

Perhaps this week you could take a few moments to notice what is around you.

Listen for the sound of water.

Notice the trees.

Look at the sky.

Pay attention to a scent.

Find somewhere that sparks your curiosity.

Or simply stop and appreciate one small thing that you might otherwise have walked past.

You don't need to travel to County Leitrim or visit a waterfall.

Your own little moment of wonder might be much closer than you think.

Sometimes self-compassion isn't about doing something extraordinary.

Sometimes it's simply about slowing down enough to receive what is already here.

And perhaps, like Mary, we can allow ourselves to be curious about the places we visit, the stories they hold, and the beauty we discover along the way.

Because the journey doesn't have to be rushed.

There is plenty to notice along the way.

Go gently. 💙
